A strong start in their Round 1 clash with Green Gully last Friday night, Avondale FC were determined to build on their form and focus on the defence at their first home game of Season 2018 at Paisley Park.
There was one change to the 4-3 win last week with Phil Riccobene being sidelined with his early injury against Green Gully. His brother Jimmy coming into the matchday squad whilst Dillon Jakupi moved up into the starting lineup for his first start with the club.
In the opening minutes, Kingston City FC failed to retain any amount of possession and gave the ball back to the Avondale players far too easily. The strong breeze gave the home team the advantage and was an obvious factor to Kingston being unable to play out from the back or through.
It was a poor goal kick in the 30th minute from the Kingston keeper that led to the first goal, with Elvis Kamsoba pouncing on the errant ball and putting through Liam Boland on goal, whose shot was parried away by the goalkeeper to a lurking Joey Katebian on the edge of the box. Joey made no mistake with his left foot putting a strong hit through the keeper into the top of the goal.
3 minutes late a well-worked ball into the box by Elvis Kamsoba put Kaine Sheppard up against 2 defenders where he was able to get his shot away and across the keeper for a 2:0 lead and Kaine’s 3rd goal for the 2018 campaign. The goal saw the Avondale boys head into halftime with a two-goal lead.
The second half saw Kingston with an opportunity to use the strong breeze, however, it would be Avondale once again controlling the ball and creating the opportunities, and with a red card given to a Kingston player in the 57th minute for a flying elbow, those chances would come thick and fast.
After last week’s efforts, with both Joey and Kaine on the scorer’s sheet, it was only natural that Liam Boland was to get in on the act and in the 73rd minute, he was able to get his goal with expert control in the box with the thigh and right foot volley into the net.
With little resistance, Avondale went on the see the game out 3:0 and make it 2 wins from 2 for the 2018 campaign. Joey Katebian was judged Avondale’s man of the match taking his 2018 goalscoring tally to 2 from 2 games.
It was a good solid 3:0 win and good team performance from the lads… also nice to keep a clean sheet and back up our first-round win – Joey Katebian
Earlier in the day, the U20’s succumbed to a 2:0 loss, but a more improved effort from the game against Green Gully saw many positives taken.
We obviously know it’s a long season, we have many more rounds ahead of us, for us to keep our focus we must take the games one at a time – Anthony Barbieri
Our next game sees us travel to ABD Stadium against Hume City FC. A team that saw Kingston get a 4-2 result last week in Round 1. U20s kick off at 6pm with Seniors kicking off at 8pm.
