Round 5 2018 v FC Bulleen Lions

After a perfect start to the season the boys looked to back up last week’s win against Port Melbourne Sharks SC, with a win against FC Bulleen Lions to make the season five from five.

There was only one change to the matchday squad as youngster Christian Inglese made way for club Vice-Captain Jonatan Germano, who returned to the matchday squad after resting a sore calf. The starting lineup remained unchanged.

Coming into the game the squad was warned about complacency as the FC Bulleen Lions table position didn’t warrant their overall squad ability so far this season. With this came an attacking intent to start the game like no other. Within the first minute Avondale FC had already had a couple of shots on target only to be denied by the keeper, the fifth strike on target in the fourth minute saw Kaine Sheppard be denied again by the goalkeeper, but the ball popped up perfectly for a lurking Liam Boland who put away another header goal for the club.

It was long before the Avondale boys were on the scoresheet again after great build-up play in the 12th minute saw Liam Boland put a perfect ball into the path of a steaming Joey Katebian which saw no mistake putting the ball past the FC Bulleen goalkeeper to take the game 2:0.

After the frenetic start, the game started to calm as FC Bulleen Lions started to claim more possession and be able to start stringing some passes together and the scoreline remained at halftime.

The second half started strongly for Avondale FC as the players grew comfortable enjoying the lion share of possession. With a number of attacking forays the boys deserved more goals, but with the FC Bulleen goalkeeper keeping them right in the game and rushed shots for the boys, Avondale FC wasn’t able to add any more goals to the tally. The game ended 2:0 and another 3 points to add to the perfect start for the season.

Bentleigh Greens SC and Heidelberg United FC remain undefeated and having perfect starts to the season also which is starting to build anticipation amongst the football public to see some heavyweight NPL battles.

The Easter weekend sees the Avondale FC boys take to their first game of the FFA Cup with a Round 4 clash against Werribee City away. With the fantastic start to the season, the boys have a target of going deep into the cup and it will be starting next Saturday at 2pm.
