Round 23 2018 v Melbourne Knights FC

With Bentleigh Greens SC only earning one point in their draw on Friday night it was an opportunity for Avondale FC to move into second place if they were to secure all three points against an in-form Melbourne Knights FC on Saturday afternoon.

Back at Avenger Park for the first time in three weeks, it would be off the back of a fantastic week for the club with three wins and one of those included an FFA Cup Round of 32 win against Marconi Stallions FC.  Dillon Jakupi was the only player out of the squad after a Round 22 win against Northcote City FC.

Avondale FC started the game in the same form they have been playing with for the last few weeks. Dominating possession and dominating the chances on goal. It would be the 20th minute where the deadlock would be broken and broken from an absolute peach of a finish from Liam Boland who struck a vicious long-range volley from 30 yards out to make it 1:0.

In the 29th minute, it would be Kaine Sheppard who would add to the scoreline after a fantastic run from Elvis Kamsoba down the left wing to give Avondale FC a 2:0 lead.

The third goal would see Kamsoba and Sheppard link up again as Kambsoba was able to produce even more magic for Sheppard who would have an easy tap-in with the opposite boot for a 3:0 lead.

A lapse in concentration before the halftime break gave Melbourne Knights FC a glimmer of hope with the halftime scoreline reading 3:1 to a rampant Avondale FC side.

Seven minutes after the halftime break it would be a Melbourne Knights FC free kick that would cut the deficit even more with the scores at 3:2.

Only moments later Avondale FC would regain their two-goal lead as Boland against was able to bustle his way into the box and finish from close range for a 4:2 lead in the 65th minute. Both Boland and Sheppard with two goals each.

A late scare in the 71st minute saw the lead reduce once again to 4:3, but the seven-goal thriller was enough to give Avondale FC all three points and their job was made easier after Melbourne Knights went down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes of the match.

With the win, it meant that Avondale FC was able to regain 2nd position and sets up a juicy Round 24 clash as the opponents will be Bentleigh Greens SC and they were the team in which Avondale FC leapfrogged.
