Round 26 2018 @ Heidelberg United FC

The final game of the home and away regular season saw Avondale FC take on an understrength Heidelberg United FC after already claiming their title and a midweek FFA Cup fixture.

The game was also a chance to rest some of Avondale FC’s starters and give opportunities for some much-needed minutes for players leading into the 2018 finals series.

Out of the squad after a massive 6:2 victory over South Melbourne FC went Elvis Kamsoba, Kaine Sheppard, Jimmy Riccobene and Ramazan Tavsancioglu. Jeff Fleming moved from the starting XI to the substitutes bench.

Club stalwarts Anthony Strano and Jonatan Germano returned to the starting XI, and it was a welcome return for Germano who has had an injury interrupted season.

From a neutral point of view the first half it would have been an excellent game to watch as there were chances at both ends. Both keepers got tested early, but it would be Heidelberg who would convert their opportunity from a set piece. However, it wouldn’t be long before Jonatan Germano opened up his account for the day and the half-time scoreline was locked at 1:1.

There were two forced half-time changes for Avondale FC as keeper Chris Oldfield, and defender Dillon Jakupi made way for Evan Markogiannakis and Jeff Fleming.

The flowing attacking style continued in the second half, and it would be another goal to Jonatan Germano to give Avondale FC a 2:1 lead.

The game was all but over when a Joey Katebian assist gave Liam Boland his fifteenth league goal for the season and a 3:1 Avondale FC lead.

Heidelberg United FC was able to pull one back from another set piece but with the scores at 3:2, that’s how it remained at full-time, and Avondale FC were able to record their highest points tally breaking last year’s record with 55 for the 2018 season.

With the win, Avondale FC secured third place in the 2018 NPL Season and an elimination final against Port Melbourne Sharks SC on September 8 at Avenger Park.

Avondale FC will be looking to go one better as they made the same finals last year but will be looking to progress to the semi-finals this season.
