Match Day 6 preview: Green Gully – Saturday 23rd @Green Gully Reserve 3:00pm Kick Off.

Avondale are set to face their first real test of the season as they look to continue their stellar start to the season, hitting the road to take on fifth-placed Green Gully this weekend.

League-leaders Avondale have five wins in as many games and are yet to trail at any stage in any match this season, but will face a tough opponent in Green Gully.

This will be the first time the Azuri have faced a top-six side this season, with the previous five wins all coming against teams in the bottom half of the table.

The Cavaliers already have an impressive win to their name, knocking off reigning champions Heidelberg in round two. Since then though they’ve found the going a little tougher, losing to fellow title-challengers Bentleigh, as well as strugglers Dandenong City.

Gully’s lofty position may come as a bit of a surprise after the club narrowly avoided relegation last year, on surviving by beating Moreland City in the promotion-relegation playoff.

Any result for the Avengers will ensure they maintain outright top spot on the table, but Zoran’s boys will no doubt be chasing a sixth-straight win.

In order to secure the point though Avondale’s league-best defence will have to see off another in-form striker this week, Gully frontman Alex Salmon has found the back of the net five times this season.

Coach: Stephen Downes

Downes took over the top job at Green Gully mid-way through last season. He had previously been involved with the club, winning the Victorian Premier League in 2011 and the Dockerty Cup in 2013 as a player. He managed the club in 2015 in a caretaker roll, alongside then-player Rodrigo Vargas. Downes reclaimed the top job after Arthur Papas left the club last year. As a player, he had stints at at English professional clubs Grimsby Town and York City.

Impact players:

Alex Salmon – A striker, Salmon has scored five goals this season for Green Gully.

Jerrad Tyson – The Gully keeper has two clean sheets next to his name so far this year and has pulled off a number of great saves along the way.
