Match Day 11 – PREVIEW

The NPL season continues this Saturday at Avenger Park when Avondale take on Altona Magic at 3:15pm.

The top-of-the-table Avengers enter the game on a club-record 11-game undefeated streak but they will have a tough task extending it against a strong Altona opponent.

The Magic are back in Victoria’s top flight for the first time since 2010, having won promotion last year after finishing on top of the NPL 2 West.

After a sluggish start they’ve won six of their last seven games in the league, their only loss in that stretch coming to Heidelberg, and sit fourth on the table.

The game comes at the start of what will be an immense three weeks for Avondale. They will play Altona before taking on Preston Lions in a mid-week FFA Cup match, followed by Heidelberg next weekend and Bentleigh the week after that.

So far Avondale have passed almost every test that has been thrown at them, including a win over then-second placed Knights and fellow finals challengers Green Gully.

But the next four games will undoubtedly be the biggest challenge the Avengers have faced so far, and if they can emerge from them still undefeated they’ll be in a prime position entering the second half of the season.
