Late strike lifts Avondale past Dandenong

Avondale have continued their unbeaten run in dramatic fashion, scoring in the 95th minute to clinch a last-gasp 2-1 win over the Dandenong Thunder at Avenger Park on Saturday.

Christos Theodorakopoulos was the hero for the Avengers when his right-foot strike flew past the keeper and into the bottom corner with just 30 seconds left in the game.

The late winner was the first senior goal of Theodorakopoulos’ young career and sparked wild scenes of celebration at Avenger Park.

Earlier, Liam Boland gave Avondale the lead mid-way through the first half with a stunning long-range effort from a free kick. His strike took a small deflection, but sailed past the keeper nonetheless.

The Thunder brought themselves level in the 69th minute through Nahuel Bonada after a cross found him in acres of space at the back post.

That equaliser set up a frantic end to the game, with end-to-end action and chances for both sides to take the lead before Theodorakopoulos netted the winner to extend Avondale‘s undefeated streak to seven games.

Avondale sit in second place on the table, just one point behind league leaders South Melbourne.

The Avengers will face Yarraville Glory on Wednesday night in round five of the FFA Cup at BT Connor Reserve, before returning to league action on Sunday when they face St Albans at Churchill Reserve.
