Matchday Five – PREVIEW

A red hot Avondale will be looking to claim their fourth win in a row this Saturday night when they take on the Melbourne Knights at 8:00pm at City Vista Recreation Reserve.

The match was originally scheduled to take place at Avenger Park, but has been relocated to Caroline Springs George Cross’ ground.

Regardless of the location, the Avengers will be entering the match in fine form. Avondale have won their last three matches, scoring seven goals and keeping three consecutive clean sheets.

The winning streak has seen Avondale climb from the bottom of the table all the way up to fifth, ahead of last season’s silverware winners Heidelberg and Bentleigh.

Star striker and 2019 NPL Victoria golden boot winner Liam Boland scored his first goal of the season last week against Dandenong City, while Yusuf Ahmed and Jonatan Germano also found the back of the net for the first time this year.

Meanwhile, the Knights have endured a tough start to the season with the side from Somers Street winless in their first four games.

The Knights have struggled early, losing to Hume City & St Albans and drawing with Dandenong Thunder & Port Melbourne. They have struggled to keep the ball out of their net this season having conceded 10 goals already, the third-most in the league.

But regardless of form, the Knights will surely be up and about on Saturday with the two teams sharing a heated rivalry in recent years.

The two sides met three times last year, with the Knights bettering Avondale twice – including a 2-1 extra time win in the FFA Cup – and the Avengers winning once.
