Avondale FC\u2019s recent recruit Eleni Zorbas has dedicated herself to football from a young age, since \u201c[growing] up in a football loving family,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With an early desire to be like her older brother and a shortage of female teams at the time, Zorbas would attend her brother\u2019s training sessions, replicating the drills on the sideline with her father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, she assembled enough females to form a squad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She says her biggest football achievement was returning to her childhood club, following a short retirement, where the team achieved consecutive promotions from State League 4 to State league 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zorbas eventually joined Avondale\u2019s senior women\u2019s team midway through the 2021 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While previously teammates with other Avondale players, Zorbas highlights, \u201ccombined with the rest of the squad being so welcoming and amazing, as well as the club culture, made it an easy decision to join.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a player, Zorbas reveals herself to be \u201cpretty versatile,\u201d with the flexibility to alternate positions to accommodate the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHappy to slot in wherever we need \u2026 except keeper, I\u2019m too short for that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zorbas reflects perhaps her speed or agility are some of her best footballing attributes but she would rather let the coach decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnything to get the job done\u201d and \u201cget the best out of my team\u201d are representative of Zorbas\u2019 persistent mindset on the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She highlights how broken bones have previously not prevented her from continuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zorbas further states she lives by the mentality that, \u201cit is what it is, just letting go of things you can\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Favourite football memory:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n As a junior in 2006, Zorbas walked out the players to the pitch before a game between the Socceroos and Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cStanding in the middle of the MCG with 100k people watching was pretty surreal,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Favourite player:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Twee Pham<\/p>\n\n\n\n Superstitions:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sits down during team huddles<\/p>\n\n\n\n Life off the field:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Zorbas works in digital marketing and events.
